Acupuncture treatment is a completely natural, holistic and very safe form of healing. It’s application involves the insertion of fine, hair like needles into the body at very specific points. This helps to stimulate the body’s own very powerful healing responses.
Basically it’s use has an influence on the production and regulation of blood, energy (Qi) and body fluids to bring about healing and restore the person to a state of good health. Originally, this treatment was used as preventative medicine as it has a very strong effect on the immune system and can serve to keep a person healthy and functioning at an optimal level.
Many people visit an acupuncturist periodically for preventative treatments, wishing to boost their immune system and further enhance there health however, it is generally more common that people book an appointment with me to help them with a symptom, several symptoms or a specific condition.
However, this powerful treatment not only has an effect on boosting the immune system but also upon all other systems of the body. By needling specific points on the body, the acupuncturist can have an effect on the endocrine, lymphatic, circulatory, reproductive, digestive, respiratory, integumentary, muscular, urinary, skeletal and nervous systems.
What Does an Acupuncture Treatment Feel Like?
When the points are needled, most of the time the patient will not feel much more than a momentary dull, achy sensation upon needle insertion. You may also feel a mild “electrical” sensation moving down the meridian pathways, though this is less common.
Most patients find the treatment very relaxing during and after as it can often bring about a mild to profound sense of peace. The patient often leaves the treatment feeling relaxed both mentally and physically.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The benefits from an acupuncture treatment are cumulative, so more than one treatment is usually necessary. For acute conditions a person can expect to have upward of six treatments, but you will usually begin to feel relief after just the first few. Chronic conditions may take longer to heal, depending on the type, severity, and duration of the condition.
Preventative treatments and acupuncture for general well-being may also be scheduled to help keep you in optimum health.
Is Acupuncture Treatment Safe?
Yes, the treatment is used by millions of people every year. An acupuncturist is required to undergo extensive education at specialist schools. The training includes detailed study of human anatomy and training in Clean Needle Technique.
I am a fully qualified acupuncture practitioner with a Degree in Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture and I am a member of the Acupuncture Society and fully licensed and regulated with them. As required by law, I use pre-sterilized, disposable, single-use needles to ensure your complete safety during every treatment.
Your First Visit:
When you arrive for your first treatment I will carry out a complete and confidential consultation and case history with you. The case history asks questions about your current state of health, past illnesses, and family history.
These questions are important because the holistic approach of Oriental medicine takes everything into account. Your current symptoms may not seem related to past health issues, but our bodies are complex landscapes and everything that happens to them leaves its mark. Please be assured that anything discussed during the treatment is completely confidential.
After reviewing your case history, we will discuss your condition, and I will examine your pulse and tongue, which are two of the basic diagnostic methods of Oriental medicine. The points I choose will depend on your condition. Once the needles are inserted, I will allow you to lie comfortably for 15-20 minutes with the needles in place.
Many people find the treatment deeply relaxing and even come to have acupuncture specifically for relaxation purposes. It is therefore not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during treatments. This is also one reason many people find this treatment very effective for insomnia.
It is also common for patients to report other benefits or ‘pleasant side effects’ from treatment when they return such as, an increased sense of peace and well being, easier digestion and bowel movements and elevated states of alertness.
Benefits of Acupuncture
Many people often ask if this treatment works. The answer is of course yes and it is particularly suitable to certain conditions. Many people also like to know the benefits the treatment will bring them. I very commonly have people call me enquireing about acupuncture for pain relief of all kinds, but it can help with many more symptoms.
Acupuncture treatment works by activating the body’s own healing capabilities, so it can be beneficial for many health conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) has documented many symptoms, diseases, and conditions that have been shown in controlled clinical trials to be effectively treated with acupuncture. Please contact me here for information on or to discuss your specific symptoms…
Over the more recent years, facial acupuncture has also become rather popular as a safe, natural alternative to other facial treatments such as botox. For more information on facial acupuncture please click here.
Moxibustion:
During a treatment it is also very common to use moxibustion, also known as moxa. Moxa is a form of mug wort that burns very well and produces a kind of heat that the body responds very well to.
The acupuncturist will attach small balls of moxa to the end of the needles, bringing very warm and pleasant sensations. The heat is transmitted down the needle and absorbed into the body via the acupuncture point. Using moxa during a treatment has many healing benefits.
