Mature woman with insomniaA recent study from the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology shows that acupuncture may be may be effective in helping to alleviate the symptoms of sleep disturbance caused by the menopause.

The study comprised of over thirty clinical trials with 2,433 partakers and found a major link between acupuncture treatment and the improvement of sleep disturbance in peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women.

Researchers particularly found that a particular acupoint known as San Yin Jiao (Sp-6) to be especially helpful in the treatment, causing increased levels of serum estradiol.

In Chinese medicine, the San Yin Jiao point is a point of the spleen meridian and is said to have a beneficial effect on various organs, especially the kidneys, liver and spleen. San Yin Jiao also has a calming effect and helps to balance the energetics of the liver and gallbladder, among other things.

San Yin Jiao is a frequently used point during acupuncture treatment due to it’s many benefits and potent effect. It is easily located at around two and a half inches above the medial malleolus.
